INFORMATION ON WISDOM TOOTH EXTRACTIONS

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Can Help You Avoid Oral Health Complications

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically erupt during a patient’s late teens or early 20s. In many cases, wisdom teeth can cause problems when they erupt an angle or fail to fully erupt because of a lack of space. They can also exert pressure on surrounding teeth, causing pain, misalignment, and other problems. Often, extraction is the best solution.

Concerns with Wisdom Teeth

In some cases, wisdom teeth grow in straight and achieve harmony with surrounding teeth. In these cases, they may not require extraction as long as they are closely monitored and carefully brushed and flossed each day. Wisdom teeth become problematic when they cause disturbance to surrounding gum tissue, nerves, or bone, or when they begin to collide with other teeth. Because they are so far back in the jaw, wisdom teeth are more difficult to clean than other teeth, and more susceptible to decay. It is well documented that removal of wisdom teeth in young adults (below the age of 25) is associated with less after-operation pain and swelling than in older adults. Therefore, if it is determined that your wisdom teeth are likely to cause problems, your dentist will usually recommend that you have them removed earlier rather than later.

WISDOM TEETH FAQs

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt in your mouth, which usually happens when you are between 16 and 23 years of age. When there is insufficient gum space for normal eruption, these teeth become “impacted” – that is, they remain below the gum line, or not quite clear of it, because they cannot fully emerge.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause:

  • infection of adjacent gum tissue
  • dental decay of adjacent teeth
  • crowding of front teeth
  • (in rare cases) cysts.

This will always be your choice, although recommendations will be made during your consultation appointment and your options will be assessed.

There may be some bleeding and discomfort following the extractions. While your mouth heals, you have to be careful not to dislodge the blood clot or harm your healing gums. You should not consume solid foods, alcohol, coffee, soda or hot beverages in the first few days following your procedure. You shouldn’t even brush your teeth for the first day of recovery. A typical wisdom teeth recovery time is three to four days, although it can be as long as one week. The length of recovery depends a lot on how badly the wisdom teeth were impacted and how they were erupting.

At Wellsford Dental, we will give you an itemised quote during your consultation appointment. This will include an estimate of sedation and extraction fees.

If you have medical insurance, your insurance may cover the removal of wisdom teeth removal through a specialist oral surgeon. We sometimes refer wisdom tooth extractions, if they are expected to be more complex or other complications are expected.

As with all surgical procedures there are general and specific risks associated with wisdom teeth removal. Your particular risks will be discussed in detail during your consultation and questions you have will be answered for you.
